Compass Lumber Products has seen the heyday of the great California Redwood market. With the smaller trees making up the bulk of the Redwood that is logged today, the higher grades of Redwood that we are used to selling exist in very limited quantities, with the properties seemingly diminished somewhat because of the relative youth of the trees cut. We have now branched out to encompass certified plantation lumber as the bulk of our business. Although we still stock and supply Redwood, we see the limited amount of high grade diminishing even further as the years go by.

We feel that the Redwood produced by Redwood Empire Sawmill, Willits Redwood Sawmill, and Big Creek Sawmill, is the absolute best that is available today. Because of good forest management throughout the industry, we feel we will have good mid-grades of Redwood for years to come. The bankruptcy of Pacific Lumber Company, which resulted in the takeover of assets by Mendocino Redwood Company, is now logging the Pacific Lumber land under the name of the newly formed Humboldt Redwood Company, but at a reduced cut rate. This is ultimately good for the forest, but will diminish even further, the amount of high quality Redwood available.

Our customers will continue to get only the highest grades available to meet their needs, but as we explore the scientific enhancement of plantation grown lumber, we feel we will be able to offer a product that looks like Redwood, but performs with all the combined good qualities of the old growth Redwood we knew, as well as the good qualities of composites and hardwoods without the downside. DreamDex is our first venture into this exciting new area, and we feel it will ultimately fill the need for a high quality "super lumber" product at an affordable price.
