Compass Lumber Products, Inc. was started in 1978. We have been in continuous operation since, serving the retail lumber-yards of California. Our focus, for the first 15 years, was to supply the highest grades of solid redwood lumber with impeccable service. We believe we achieved those goals. In the last of the 1980’s, we saw a need to begin to expedite the conservation of our redwood forests to help sustain the resource we sold. At that time, we began to experiment with finger-jointed redwood as a means of using waste and inferior grades to produce a high quality clear product. After 21 years of experimenting with different combinations, we feel we now produce the highest quality F.J. Trim boards and F.J. Vertical Grain Redwood sidings available in the industry today.

At the dawn of the new millennium, we saw that the high quality Redwood, which seemed to be so abundant in past years, was becoming less and less available. Our finger joint products were becoming more important as solid clear Redwood deteriorated in quantity and quality. We now began to branch out into new species.

In 2003, we began to sell a finger jointed clear product produced from a plantation grown, fast growing, tree from Chile, Radiata Pine. We stayed with the Chilean pine for 5 years. In 2007, we became F.S.C. (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified.

We became more conscious of the fact that we would have to do our part to help in the sustainability of our forests. We switched our radiate F.J. to a New Zealand, sustainable  yield, product. We have an F.S.C. Certified product made for Compass Lumber Products. Enviro-Trim® is a product exclusively produced for, and sold by, Compass Lumber Products.

We had a monumental occasion happen in late 2007. We were asked by New Forest Strategies, a scientific concern, if we would help develop a product using a breakthrough discovery in the scientific enhancement of wood. We agreed and after a 2 ½ year process of experimentation, DreamDex™ was born. Compass Lumber Products is the exclusive distributor of DreamDex™ in northern California.

Finally to round out our finger joint program, we sought a lower price, yet high level trim and siding product. We became the West Coast Exclusive sales agent for Kimberly Bay™; a preprimed finger joint product made from plantation grown Paulownia.

In addition to our Radiata Pine and Paulownia products, we are one of the few WCLIB board certified companies, accredited to grade stamp stress grades of redwood. We have supplied the cooling tower and tank industry of the U.S.A. for 25 years with grade stamped, stress graded Redwood.

In summation, Compass Lumber Products is moving towards becoming an environmentally responsible company in all aspects of our business. It is our position, that by using plantation grown, fast growing tree fiber, as the basis for our products, we can help to sustain our precious redwood forests. It is also our belief that limited harvesting of redwood is necessary to maintain the health of the forest. It is our understanding that if we can provide a substitute that can supplement the need for redwood, in some instances, we will be doing our part to insure there will be higher grade, sustainable redwood available for limited uses. There will also be much less pressure on our forests, ensuring older, more beautiful, more useful, Redwood trees for generations to come.
